Les mesures biométriques varient suivant le moment de la grossesse : pendant le 1er trimestre, c'est la distance craniocaudale (du sommet du crâne à l'extrémité de la colonne vertébrale); au cours des 2e et 3e trimestres, les mesures portent essentiellement sur le diamètre bipariétal (de la tête), le diamètre thoracique et la longueur du fémur.

[La biométrie fœtale permet] de préciser la date de conception et le terme, d'évaluer le développement fœtal [et] de dépister certaines anomalies (hydramnios, spina-bifida, anomalies crâniennes, etc.).
